In 1982 (Year of my birth), two brothers, Bruce and Winston Dorbowski created a toy camera called the Hipstamatic. This was a plastic toy camera, which is rumored to have sold only 156 units. Looking through ebay, I could not find a single Hipstamatic, so this is obviously a very rare camera. In the photography world, the last few years has seen a rise in retro photography. There are hundreds of Photoshop actions made to achieve the look of a retro photo, in fact it’s being used so much it’s starting to lose it’s meaning. None the less Hipstamatic photography has become a sought after look by amateurs and professionals alike.

Here is an example of the Hipstamatic photo, and the because of the random nature of the photos, it ends up having a very organic look. Obviously the quality is horrible, but there is a beauty to it, and that is the appeal. This type of effect is so popular there are websites and communities based around this.
Sadly there are no more Hipstamatic cameras being sold, but you are still able to experience the essence of the Hipstamatic camera through a Iphone app. All you Iphone users should download the Hipstamatic, and start capturing some fantastic images.
Please feel free to share your images with us non Iphone users, by placing a link in the comments section.

I’m a little jealous of iphone developers, because they get to make all the cool apps.

@picsareus-If you read the article carefully then you would have noticed I was referring to the hipstamatic effect. Meaning photoshop, apps, those kind of effects. And that it’s being overused. I wasn’t referring to the camera.
Also, if the world was free of spam, I wouldn’t need the recaptcha. Blame the spammers.
