Joanna and Mynor Engagement PortriatBy John Kim | July 25th, 2011

Joanna and Mynor were definitely the most interesting couple to photograph. When we first met at the ranch, they told us that they were camera shy, but soon all of that went away. For two people who proclaim to be camera shy, they didn’t need much direction in posing. What you see in the photos was completely them, which made our jobs a lot easier. And can you believe Joanna was sick that day? I definitely had a great time at the ranch, and the location really matched their outfits.

Photo and Retouch Work By Erik JohanssonBy John Kim | July 20th, 2011

I’m a big fan of mixing real photos and doing extensive retouching to create surreal works of art. I believe last year I wrote a little article about how that’s the new form of photography these days. Well Erik Johansson really is my new inspiration. I feel like I’m pretty good at Photoshop, but this guy is on a whole new level compared to me. He must be using some other kinds of tools I’m completely unaware of. Well I do know that the new version Photoshop does have 3D features, so he must be mixing that. The thing is that when you look at something and say to yourself that there’s no way you could do that, then that’s true ART. Enjoy the rest of his works.

Ashley Family PortriatBy John Kim | July 19th, 2011

Ashley is originally from San Diego, and when she asked us to do a family photo shoot it looks like we were going to do a little road trip. We had scheduled to meet up at Balboa Park in the afternoon which gave us time to really look around and prepare. I’ve never been to Balboa, but it was huge and very crowded. Crowded locations always creates a challenge for photographers, but luckily we found a few secluded areas.

Learn Studio Lighting From Sylights.comBy John Kim | February 16th, 2011

Can you believe the wealth of information you can get from randomly browsing through peoples blogs? Well today I stumbled upon a website that will forever change the way I approach studio lighting. It has always seemed that studio lighting was the secret sauce that separated the novice from the pros. There were many occasions where I would see great lighting and wonder how it was pulled off. Now the secret of the sauce is out the packet.

Combining HDR and Time Lapse VideoBy John Kim | February 8th, 2011
Mike Curtis from Macworld.com gives a very interesting tutorial on how to combine HDR photos with time lapse. What you get is a time lapse movie with vibrant details. HDR stands for high-dynamic-range, and is the ability for a image to show a high amount of detail in both shadows and highlights of a photo. So take a photo with a regular point and shoot during late afternoon, and you will either have a blown out sky, or black silhouettes. In order to bring out the details, then you’ll need to use a technique called HDR photography.
Watch Mike Curtis’s Video, it’s very hypnotizing.

East Coast Vacation PhotosBy John Kim | November 2nd, 2010

Me and my wife just came back from a vacation from the East Coast to visit family. The trip was meant to recharge my batteries after over 1.5 years of work, but instead it became the worst vacation I’ve ever had. Not to get into to much detail about it, but we spent almost half of our time driving through confusing East Coast highway systems, we went through 10 toll roads costing an average of $5 a piece, New York raped us with $18 parking, and $25 mediocre sandwiches, we got a speeding ticket, and I was sick through half of the vacation. By the time we came back, we needed a vacation from a vacation.
